European Muslim Brotherhood’s Gaza Appeal Urges Action and Solidarity

An appeal by the European Council of Imams (ECI) addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and called for immediate action, urging followers to escalate public, civil, media, and human rights movements to pressure decision-makers to urgently take deterrent measures against Israel. On 20 July 2025, the council issued a public appeal, published via its official Facebook page, urging Muslims and the wider public to respond to what it called a war of starvation and genocide in Gaza. The post begins:

Urgent appeal from the European Council of Imams regarding the escalating war of starvation and genocide in Gaza. The war of starvation, genocide, and mass destruction waged by the occupation against the Palestinian people in Gaza has reached a horrific level of escalating brutality before the eyes of the entire world. There is no doubt that remaining silent about these horrific horrors encourages war criminals to perpetrate them further. In light of the gravity of this situation, which portends a greater wave of mass destruction among starving civilians, in addition to the toll of killing, wounding, displacing, and terrorizing civilians, and the declared plans for ethnic cleansing, the European Council of Imams issues this urgent appeal to Muslims and the general public in Europe and the world to:

First: Escalate public, civil, media and human rights movements to pressure decision-makers everywhere to urgently take serious and deterrent measures that force the occupation to stop this brutal crime it is committing in the Gaza Strip, and write to governments, parliaments and European Union bodies to demand that they comply with their principled and moral responsibilities in this regard and to quickly impose deterrent sanctions on the Israeli occupation, which has violated international law and international conventions.

Second: Next Thursday, July 24, will be a day of fasting in solidarity with the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, reviving the values of brotherhood, consolation, and solidarity. We will strive to organize an austerity iftar for those fasting in associations, mosques, Islamic centers, and cultural and social facilities, with supplication during prayers, asking God to lift the affliction from the people of Gaza. • The call includes a solidarity fasting day, coordinated fundraising, and support for humanitarian convoys to break the blockade.

  • Friday sermons across Europe are recommended to raise awareness and support for Palestinians facing violence and starvation.

  • The appeal encourages public pressure on governments and institutions to impose sanctions and uphold international law.

In November 2019, the European Council of Imams (ECI) met for the first time in Paris, France. According to its own account, the committee has some 50 members from 20 European countries, including Germany. In 2021, the ECI was named by the German domestic intelligence agency as a part of the European Muslim Brotherhood. The aim of the organization is, among other things, to coordinate the activities of various Islamic organizations, to act as a representation of interests, to promote the Islamic presence in the political and social sphere, and to consolidate the Islamic identity.

Muslim Brotherhood Gaza Advocacy Drives Europe’s Pro-Palestine Activism

Muslim Brotherhood-related groups across Europe have maintained an influential role in advocacy for Gaza and the Palestinian cause, as reflected through ongoing media projects with ties to Hamas leadership and persistent campaigns pressing European governments for Palestinian statehood recognition. The Palestine Action ban and subsequent civil liberties debate, together with ongoing scrutiny of Gaza aid convoys organized by figures like Zaher Birawi, exemplify how Brotherhood-linked organizations operate at the intersection of political lobbying, grassroots activism, and humanitarian relief. In Ireland, internal disputes over Gaza funds within the ICCI demonstrate both the contested nature of such advocacy and the transnational dimension of Brotherhood networks. These efforts coincide with growing European Muslim community engagement, heightened civil society mobilization around Gaza, and intensifying collaboration between Islamic organizations and progressive activists, a pattern confirmed by independent reporting and official reviews. External analyses further point to the role of Gulf state funding, ongoing intra-European debates about the limits of activism, and the ways in which advocacy for Gaza is increasingly intertwined with questions of national security, media regulation, and legal boundaries.
