Pro-Hezbollah Academic Alleges Foreign Influence Led to Prosecution over Antisemitism

David Miller, a controversial anti-Zionist UK academic, has alleged that foreign influence was to blame for his prosecution over antisemitic statements. On 5 June 2025, The Jewish Chronicle reported that Miller faced private prosecution over antisemitic social media posts, including some justifying street violence against Zionists. The article begins:

The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) has launched a private prosecution against controversial anti-Zionist academic David Miller over allegedly antisemitic posts he made on X. Miller, formerly a professor at the University of Bristol and now a presenter on Iranian-controlled Press TV, has been vocal about his anti-Israel views, including previously calling for Zionists to be “targeted” across the world. Announcing its legal action, the CAA alleged that Miller had “used a public communications network to send messages of a menacing character” in violation of the Communications Act 2003. The allegations are understood to relate to three social media posts apparently made by Miller in recent months.

David Miller’s Troubling Ties: Iranian Regime, Muslim Brotherhood, and Hezbollah

David Miller is a British academic and former professor of political sociology at the University of Bristol, known for his controversial research on media, Islamophobia, and influence operations. He directed the investigative platform Spinwatch, which has received funding from organizations with ties to the Global Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. Miller has contributed to Al-Mayadeen, a Beirut-based pro-Hezbollah media outlet, and produces “Palestine Declassified” for Press TV, the Iranian state broadcaster. He co-authored the EU-funded report “Islamophobia and European Media,” arguing that European media and states foster anti-Muslim narratives.

Miller’s public claims have led to accusations of inciting hatred and his dismissal from Bristol University, though he maintains he was cleared of anti-Semitism. He has appeared at events organized by the Islamic Human Rights Commission, a UK NGO with UN close links to the Iranian regime. Miller remains a polarizing figure in debates on Islamophobia, Zionism, and the influence of pro-Israel lobbies in the UK and Europe. During the 2021 protests in Iran sparked by the death of a young woman while in police custody, Miller alleged that the CIA and the US government were “one key actor” in the unrest.

According to media reports, an employment tribunal ruled in February 2024 that Miller had been unfairly dismissed from Bristol University and that his anti-Zionist beliefs qualified as a protected characteristic under the 2010 Equality Act. His compensation was halved after he had posted comments saying that “Judeophobia barely exists these days.”
