UK Government’s New Partner to Tackle Anti-Muslim Hate Has Islamist Ties

A British anti-Muslim hate initiative marks the UK government’s latest effort to address what it calls record levels of anti-Muslim incidents. On 21 July 2025, GOV.UK announced the British Muslim Trust (BMT), led by Akeela Ahmed MBE, as the lead partner for its new Combatting Hate Against Muslims Fund, tasked with improving reporting and supporting victims. The article begins:

The Combatting Hate Against Muslims Fund was established this year to tackle the record levels of anti-Muslim hate. British Muslim Trust will receive funding as part of a new government drive against record levels of anti-Muslim hate. Funding will boost victim support and strengthen hate crime reporting nationwide. The Trust unites decades of expertise from Aziz Foundation and Randeree Charitable Trust. The British Muslim Trust (BMT) has been selected as the recipient of the government’s new Combatting Hate Against Muslims Fund, a key initiative to address the rise in anti-Muslim hatred across England. The fund was established this year to respond to the evolving nature of religious intolerance and targeted hate incidents faced by Muslim communities, which are at the highest level on record.

The Aziz Foundation: A Scholarship Organization for the GMB in Britain?

The Aziz Foundation (AF), named as one of the expert contributors of the new body, is a grant-making body and scholarship organization based in London that supports individuals and organizations with scholarships and financial endowments. It was founded by multi-millionaire property investor Asif Haroon Aziz. Several individuals in the Foundation’s former leadership were closely tied to the European Global Muslim Brotherhood (GMB) network, including the European Network Against Racism and the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB). Shenaz Bunglawala, a former Aziz Foundation Assistant Director, has also been in charge of the research department of Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND), a charity with close ties to the GMB in Britain. Former AF leadership also included figures such as Timothy Winter (aka. Sheikh Abdal-Hakim Murad), who has participated in conferences aiming to “revive” the International Islamic Federation of Student Organizations (IIFSO), a historic Muslim Brotherhood-linked student/youth body—suggesting organizational and ideological overlap with European and transnational Islamist networks. The Aziz Foundation has also provided funding for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims (APPGBM), which collaborates closely with the MCB. The Foundation contributed to a 2023 report on Muslim civil society presented to the British Parliament that was dominated by GMB voices.

The Foundation supports initiatives proposing a contested definition of Islamophobia. While the Foundation portrays its work as defending against Islamophobia and advancing British Muslim participation, external reporting highlights concerns whether Aziz Foundation-supported campaigns on Islamophobia definition risk conflating legitimate criticism of Islamist groups with genuine anti-Muslim bigotry, potentially narrowing the acceptable bounds of public debate. This mix of civil society engagement, religious philanthropy, and ideological alignment with GMB-linked groups places the Aziz Foundation—and its partners—at the center of debates over Islamophobia, Islamist influence, and the political mobilization of British Muslims.
