Geert Wilders
Geert Wilders, leader of the Dutch Party for Freedom (Partij voor de Vrijheid, PVV), is a prominent figure in European national conservatism. His party emphasizes Dutch sovereignty, strict immigration control, and the preservation of national identity. Wilders has proposed policies such as banning the Quran, closing mosques, and halting asylum applications, arguing that Islamic culture threatens Dutch values rooted in Enlightenment liberalism. Unlike many national conservatives who emphasize Christian heritage, Wilders presents himself as a staunch secularist defending Western freedoms from religious encroachment. Economically, the PVV supports generous welfare policies—but explicitly for native Dutch citizens, combining social spending with exclusionary nationalism. The party operates without formal membership, with Wilders as its sole official member and undisputed leader—making it a personalist, populist organization. While differing in tone and structure from more traditional national conservative parties like Hungary’s Fidesz or Poland’s PiS, the PVV fits within the broader European trend of culturally defensive, anti-globalist nationalism.
