Muslim American Society
Muslim American Society (MAS) was founded in 1993 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The organization presents itself as a national Islamic movement focused on education, community service, and civic engagement among Muslim Americans. Its founding members have acknowledged that MAS was initially established by individuals influenced by the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood, and multiple studies have described it as the Brotherhood’s principal organizational expression in the United States during the 1990s and early 2000s. The MAS was created to serve as a formal structure for the Brotherhood’s U.S. network, with overlapping leadership and programmatic coordination with other Islamist groups such as the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA). Although MAS later claimed independence from the Brotherhood, its ideological framework—emphasizing Islam as a comprehensive system governing all aspects of life—continues to reflect that lineage. Today, MAS operates dozens of chapters across the United States, conducting youth education programs, leadership training, and social activism under the banner of “reviving Islamic values” in American society.
