Sweden Democrats (Sverigedemokraterna, SD)

The Sweden Democrats (Sverigedemokraterna, SD) is a Swedish right-wing populist and nationalist party founded in 1988, with early roots in far-right and white nationalist movements. Under the leadership of Jimmie Åkesson since 2005, the party has rebranded to soften its image while maintaining a core focus on restrictive immigration policies, preservation of Swedish cultural identity, and skepticism toward multiculturalism. SD first entered the Riksdag in 2010 and has since grown into one of Sweden’s most influential parties, playing a pivotal role in shaping right-leaning coalitions. Its platform is closely aligned with European national conservatism, stressing sovereignty, traditional values, and opposition to supranational governance.
